I don’t usually stray away from posting about my Madonna collection on this blog but I just had to say something about the loss of Prince this week. Michael, Whitney, Bowie, and now Prince…it seems like we are losing a lot of the big pop icons of the 1980’s in recent years. In my opinion, they just don’t make superstars like they used to. These artists were bigger than life. Pre-social media, they seemed untouchable. Nowadays, artists seem much more accessible with Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc. This takes away from their mystery and myth. MTV also immortalized artists with their videos back in the 80’s and 90’s. When was the last time MTV even played a block of videos? Sometime in the wee hours of the night? Nowadays, albums leak left and right and completely take away from the experience of going to a record store and picking up some new LP’s or CD’s, taking them home and experiencing them for the first time.
The loss of Prince is really unsettling not only because he was a HUGE talent, but it also makes me think of Madonna. He and Madonna were the same age. So was Michael. And Whitney was younger than they were. You just never know what’s going to happen. We should cherish Madonna even more because we still have her out there making music and performing. Instead of bashing her left and right, the media need to focus on her music and artistry, not the way she’s aging or whatever is going on in her personal life.
Anyway, just wanted to say that although I wasn’t a Prince collector (I briefly considered it a few years back but decided against it because it would be too costly, especially with me focusing so much on Madonna), I was a huge fan of his music (mainly up until the mid 90’s) and legacy. He was a brilliant songwriter, an amazing musician and an electrifying performer. Truly one of a kind. Rest in peace.
Just for fun, here are some of my favorite Prince songs (In no particular order):
