So as you all know, after a 2-year absence, Madonna will make her return to Record Store Day this April with the special release of an exclusive 12″ called Who’s That Girl-Super Club Mix. The 12″ maxi EP will feature remixes of both “Who’s That Girl” and “Causing A Commotion”. The release celebrates the 35th Anniversary of the premiere of the Who’s That Girl film. It’s rumored that this is the first release under Madonna’s new Warner Bros. reissue contract. While that hasn’t been confirmed, it has been getting promotion on Madonna’s social media (her Facebook page), unlike her previous RSD releases which never got a mention. This vinyl is also notable in that, unlike most of her other RSD releases which were replica reissues of previous singles and albums (“I Rise” being an exception), this one is a unique compilation created especially for this year’s event (though it does feature a cover picture which was previously used on the 1987 UK 12″ picture disc of “Who’s That Girl”).
Elsewhere, Madonna has been heavily promoting ‘new’ remixes of “Frozen” coming soon, though I really don’t have much interest in this, especially if they are based on the recent tik-tok mix, which I think just sucked all the originality out of the original. I’m much more interested in the recently announced remix compilation of Madonna’s 50 #1 hits on the Billboard Dance Club chart. I always thought that this would be an ideal compilation for Madonna, so I’m glad she’s finally doing it. Though I still don’t believe that Billboard chart positions are relevant (especially these days), it’s still sounds good as an accomplishment from a marketing standpoint. 50 songs is a lot to cram onto album (and hopefully it is a fully-realized and released album and not just some digital playlist release), so I’m fully expecting some sort of megamix-type concept, which I think would be ideal. It’s going to be a fun year for Madonna releases and we’re just getting started!
